Dictate text into your Windows applications

How can I speak a sentence and put the text into the app where I am working?

A task you can try

Place the cursor in a draft message, dictate a short sentence and review names and punctuation before sending. Keep automatic Enter disabled if it would send a message too early.

How to set it up

  1. Choose microphone, language and recognition provider in Transcriber settings.
  2. Select a recording mode and delivery method.
  3. Focus a simple text field and speak a short test sentence.
  4. Check the recognized text and destination before using a longer document.

When it helps

For short messages and longer text when speaking is convenient. Recording and delivery modes let you adapt the flow to the field you are writing in.

What to check first

Recognition can make mistakes and target apps behave differently. Enter may submit a message. Check clipboard preservation, provider requirements and current plan limits; compatibility with every app is not guaranteed.

Questions before you start

Can I choose when recording stops?

Yes. Manual and hold-to-talk modes give you control over recording, alongside pause-based and continuous modes.

Is dictation the same as controlling windows by voice?

No. Dictation delivers text. The voice assistant handles supported requests about windows and workspaces.
